Temperature
Platinum resistance element inside the aspirated shield.
Station S2, second generation
One sealed instrument on a pole. Nine sensors, an ultrasonic wind head with no moving parts, two years on a set of cells, and a 1.5 km link to the hub indoors.
Every unit calibrated on the line against a reference probe.
Line of sight on 868 or 915 MHz. About 300 m through two walls.
Four lithium cells, with the solar cell doing most of the work.
Gusts land in the app while they are still blowing. Everything else, every 60 s.
What it measures
There is nothing to bolt on and nothing to spin. The wind head listens instead of turning, the rain collector self-drains, and the whole assembly weighs 1.9 kg with cells fitted.
Platinum resistance element inside the aspirated shield.
Capacitive polymer sensor, heated to shrug off condensation.
Absolute barometer, corrected to sea level for your elevation.
Ultrasonic time of flight across four transducers.
Derived from the same four transducers, so it never sticks.
Tipping bucket under a 200 cm² collector, with a debris guard.
Silicon pyranometer under a diffusing dome.
Erythemal weighted photodiode, reported on the standard scale.
Detects strikes and estimates distance from the radio signature.
Sensors and accuracy
Figures are stated across the full operating range, not at a single friendly point. Each station ships with its own calibration certificate, and you can re-run the check in the app against a reference of your choosing.
| Sensor | Range | Accuracy | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temperature | -40 to 65 °C | ±0.1 °C | 0.01 °C |
| Relative humidity | 0 to 100 % | ±1.5 % | 0.1 % |
| Barometric pressure | 300 to 1100 hPa | ±0.3 hPa | 0.01 hPa |
| Wind speed | 0 to 70 m/s | ±2 % or 0.1 m/s | 0.01 m/s |
| Wind direction | 0 to 359° | ±2° | 1° |
| Rainfall | 0 to 400 mm/h | ±3 % | 0.2 mm |
| Solar irradiance | 0 to 2000 W/m² | ±5 % | 1 W/m² |
| Ultraviolet index | 0 to 16 | ±0.5 | 0.1 |
| Lightning distance | 0 to 40 km | ±1 km | per strike |
Wind accuracy is the larger of the two figures. Housing is sealed to one metre of submersion for 30 minutes and rated from -40 to 65 °C, the same as the temperature sensor itself.
Power and range
The S2 needs no mains power and no Wi-Fi at the mast. It talks to a small hub indoors over a sub-gigahertz radio link, and the hub plugs into your router.
Four lithium cells sit in a sealed bay at the base. The solar cell on the collar keeps the pack topped up, so most stations report a battery figure that barely moves in the first year. When it does start to drop, the app gives you six weeks of notice.
Long-range radio on 868 MHz in Europe and 915 MHz in North America. Far end of the garden, the roof of the barn, the top of the boathouse: if you can see the house, the hub can hear the station. Through two walls, plan on about 300 m.
The companion app
Phone, tablet and browser. The hub keeps the data, so the app works on your own network with no account and keeps working if we ever go away.
Stored on the hub, not in a cloud you rent. Scrub back to any hour, any year, and see what the wind was doing.
Frost at the mast, gusts over a threshold you set, rain rate, and lightning inside 10 km. Pushed to your phone, or to a relay in the greenhouse.
Export any range as a table. Or let Home Assistant, Apple Home and Weather Underground read straight from the hub over the local network.
The price of the station is the whole price. Firmware updates arrive through the hub for as long as we make the product.
Compared with the S1
The S1 shipped in 2022 with cups and a vane. Cups ice up, vanes stick, and both wear out. The S2 removes every moving part except the rain bucket, triples the accuracy of the barometer and reaches five times as far.
